Before: The Calm Before the Storm

I am going to Spain! I have always wanted to visit Spain, especially Seville, with its stunning tiled courtyards and lush orange trees. I can't wait to wander through the walkable streets with my friends and soak up the summer sunlight.

That said, I am definitely apprehensive about a few things. I have accumulated many dietary restrictions throughout my life, and the foods that I cannot eat so far include gluten, cashews, pecans, peanuts, chickpeas, and tomatoes. It feels like there’s a new allergy every day. Navigating meals in a new country might be daunting or difficult at first, but I’ve been able to navigate this in other countries, so I’m sure it’ll be okay.

I also have ADHD, which means I have trouble with many things, notably adjusting to transitions between different activities. It may make it difficult to transition from classes and homework to fun activities with friends, and vice versa. I also have concerns about having the focus to do my homework. I am sure I will be fine, as this coursework is something I enjoy, but nonetheless, the worry rests at the back of my mind.

In preparation, I've been brushing up on Spanish phrases and learning more about Andalusian culture, notably customs around food, daily schedules (like siesta hours), and manners. I've also researched what to pack if I want to be comfortable but also blend in style-wise. So far, I’ve packed normally as I would for any other excursion. The main difference is changing most of my outfits from comfortable ath-leisure to comfortable basics. I've already confirmed my flights, and I will be sitting next to my best friend Hope! I feel adequately prepared to embark on this journey.

I am a somewhat seasoned traveler thanks to the generosity of my parents and grandparents, and I've been to Morocco, England, France, Greece, Mexico, Anguilla, and Italy. Because of this, I feel prepared for the universal experiences of traveling. If my luggage gets lost, I will be fine. If my flight gets delayed, I will be fine. If I feel any sense of culture shock, I will be fine. I am so grateful that I don't have to worry about how I will react in these situations because I've had so many. Traveling is not always glamorous, but for me, the setbacks are so worth the mind-opening experiences.

For this study-abroad experience, we will have weekends with no classes. This means I can visit even more countries! I am hoping to go to Paris and Portugal with Hope, but we may be swayed if another place sounds more appealing.

Ultimately, I know this will be an enthralling experience. I aim to learn about Spanish culture from the perspective of locals, to learn (not just memorize) the coursework, and to let myself enjoy every experience, whether it is good or bad. I may come across difficulties in my journey, but I hope they help me evolve into a better, kinder, and more intelligent version of myself.
